Choosing Colors for Your Dip or Spray Coating Project

While some people think of powder and dip coating as plain, utilitarian treatments designed to protect metal and other surfaces, nothing could be further from the truth. The same delightful array of colors available when you browse paint chips at the home store can be created with most dip and spray coatings, so your products can have the colors you dream of.

How Are Spray and Dip Coating Colors Made?

Colored powder coatings are typically created by coloring the plastic coating material before it's ground into a powder. For dip coating, pigments can be added to the liquid plastisol along with any other desired additives.

Can You Really Choose Any Colors?

Nearly all powder and dip coatings can be colored. Most customers start with standard colors which are typically designated by standards organizations such as Europe's RAL system, the US Military's MIL-SPEC standards, or Pantone's color matching system. Using these fixed colors as launching points (with hundreds of colors available), coatings can be matched precisely, or adjusted to meet individual customer requirements.

Colors behave differently with some plastics and some environments. For example, some colors will look more vibrant with a glossier finish, and colors in plastics such as epoxy may take on a whitish, chalky look and feel with UV exposure. Starting off with the desired color works best with powder coating for a smooth, even result, while mixing different colors of powdered plastic will produce a blend of them rather than a new color as paint would do.

What About Special Color Effects and Textures?

In addition to choosing specific colors for powder and dip coating, special effects such as glitter, iridescent, metallic, and other styles can create unique designs. Many coatings also lend themselves to a variety of textures to produce a special look or feel.
