Halar Coatings: Temperature, Friction, and Electricity Resistant

Halar is a newer plastic coating commonly used in industrial applications, due to its exceptional smoothness, dielectric strength, and performance under a wide range of temperatures.

What Is Halar?

Halar, a brand name of ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE), is an exceptionally smooth, extremely pure, very durable, crystal fluoropolymer coating similar to PTFE (Teflon). Industries and applications which take advantage of Halar's powerful capabilities include precision electronics, high-pressure mining, piping, hazardous chemical processing, ductwork, and pharmaceutical and medical industries. Recent innovations in working with Halar coatings offer techniques for coating some plastic substrates and environmentally-friendly waterborne applications.

Temperature Resistant Halar

Halar has a wide operating temperature range, from – 80 °C to 150 °C for non-load-bearing uses, with special formulations designed for improved performance at the highest part of that range. In conjunction with its limiting oxygen index of 52%, this makes it an excellent choice for coating exhaust ductwork and other environments where heat and flame are concerns. Halar also remains ductile at low temperatures, offering high performance in a much wider range of applications.

Friction Resistant Halar

One of Halar's key qualities is its exceptionally smooth, non-porous surface, which greatly reduces the risk of pinholes and other defects in coatings. In addition to helping prevent buildup of dust, debris, or bacteria, while dramatically reducing friction. These qualities make it an ideal choice for coating bearings, valves, cams, and other parts where minimal friction means improved performance, longer equipment life, and reduced maintenance needs.

Electrically Resistant Halar

With high electrical resistance and a low dielectric constant, Halar has excellent insulating qualities. Special additives can also give Halar anti-static properties. Combined with Halar's superior purity and resistance to moisture and chemicals makes it a perfect selection for many cable and wire jacketing needs.
