New Uses for Halar® ECTFE Coatings

New Uses for Halar® ECTFE Coatings

Halar® ECTFE has long been a standby protective coating when a strong, broadly resistant, extremely even, low-friction surface is needed across many industries. Commonly used to coat products for use in the chemical, microelectronics, and pharmaceutical industries, applications for Halar coatings continue to evolve to meet new and expanded needs. Innovations from its producers make Halar technology suitable for coating a wider range of materials and purposes.

Why Is Halar So Popular?

Halar is popular in large part due to its durability and versatility. It performs well in extreme conditions, offering excellent impact, corrosion, and chemical resistance, and because it has a low dielectric constant and high electrical resistivity, making it a good insulator. Suitable for environments requiring little friction, Halar coatings are frequently used in industrial settings for coating parts like bearings, wires, cables, and cams, and lining tanks, pipes, and filters. More specialized uses are found in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries where Halar's extremely smooth surface and minimal moisture absorption make it an excellent choice for high-purity environments.

New Ways to Work with Halar

Application to Plastic Substrates

Most plastics are inherently unsuitable substrates for any application requiring heat curing (most sprayed coatings) or preheating (most fluidized bed coatings). In addition, part of the coating process relies on the creation of an electrostatic charge between the coating material and the substrate (the surface material of the item to be coated). New techniques are allowing Halar to be applied to more heat-tolerant plastics, such as PEEK plastics, for use in scientific and pharmaceutical applications, among others. These applications can be challenging because of the absence of electrostatic charge, but such Halar coatings can be accomplished with care.

Waterborne Halar Coatings

Advances and innovations with Halar have also made available a new waterborne Halar coating, allowing this reliable coating to be even more versatile. Waterborne coating delivers the same outstanding chemical, corrosion, moisture, abrasion, and impact resistance along with the temperature tolerance, superior smoothness, adhesion, and high purity it provides with powder applications. Features of the waterborne technique include:

  • Can be applied without primer, using spray or dip coating techniques
  • Environmentally-friendly - using an ultra-low VOC and hazardous air pollutant-free composition
  • Creates a safer work environment
  • Suitable for many substrates, including metal, wood, glass, and polymers
  • Water-based application means faster, easier, less expensive cleanup that's more environmentally-friendly
  • Expands options for application with ambient temperature coatings
  • Allows coating of more complex items and those with hollows and cavities
