Plastisol Coating and the Environment

Plastics have gotten a bad reputation in recent years, but the truth is that plastics can often be an environmentally friendly choice. Cost-effective and extremely versatile, plastisol is one plastic coating that is popular across dozens of industries.

What Is Plastisol?

Plastisol is a vinyl-based plastic combined with a plasticizing material which gives it a characteristic rubbery feel. Highly resistant and extremely durable, it does an excellent job at deadening sounds and vibrations, and protecting parts from impact or abrasion damage. Available in nearly any color as well as especially styles, such as glittery, transparent, or metallic, it is popular for everything from coating tool handles and high-voltage equipment to soft polymer clay, fishing lures, and printing ink.

Is Plastisol Environmentally Friendly?

Because plastisol is hydrocarbon-based, its environmental impact is worth examining.

Plastisol Coatings Produce Little Waste

Adding a plastisol coating produces very little waste as only the amount to coat an item is needed, while the remainder is left for dip coating additional items. Curing time is generally quite brief, resulting in a durable, permanent coating.

Are Plasticizers a Problem?

Traditionally, plasticizers contained phthalates, which have been noted as a health concern for years now. Fortunately, innovations in plasticizer formulations have resulted in new varieties which avoid using potentially harmful phthalates.

Plastisol Is a Very Low-VOC Coating

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases released by many liquid and solid materials, such as paint, solvents, and some plastics. One of the most recognized VOCs is that well-known "new car smell". Plastisol is extremely low in VOCs, particularly when low-VOC plasticizers are used in its formulation.

Improved Longevity with Plastisol Coatings

Plastisol's extreme durability means it adds tremendous, lasting protection to the items it coats. That longer life cycle means parts and products that deteriorate far more slowly, substantially delaying the need for replacements, reducing overall waste.
