Epoxy Is Everywhere: Common Uses for Epoxy

Do you have a refrigerator? Washer and dryer? Microwave oven? Do you use gas and oil for your car? If you answered yes to any of those, congratulations — you've probably enjoyed the benefits of epoxy powder coatings.

What Is Epoxy Powder Coating?

The oldest of thermoset powder coatings, epoxy has provided decorative and protective coatings for numerous products throughout our lives. Marked by extreme corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, durability, high electrical insulation capabilities, and high adhesion, epoxy coatings will bond well and be long-lasting in most environments. Because its dip or spray application requires no toxic solvents and generates very little waste, it is an environmentally friendly coating. Epoxy's only major drawback is that it doesn't perform well when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Common Uses of Epoxy Coatings

Versatile and durable, epoxy coatings can be found in countless aspects of our daily lives and the products we interact with directly and indirectly. Some of these include:

Pipes & Valves

High adhesion and excellent chemical and corrosion resistance make epoxy an excellent, time-tested, protective coating for pipes and valves. It has been used successfully in gas and oil pipelines since the 1960s, with many of those lines continuing to be effectively coated and safely in use.

Electrical & Motor

Excellent durability and electrical insulation qualities make epoxy a favorite coating for many high-voltage and motor/generator applications such as bus bars, rotors, stators, and coils.

Industrial & Construction

Epoxy coatings, with their extreme corrosion resistance, protect vulnerable metal in numerous industrial applications. In construction epoxy coatings protect critical reinforcement bars from the corrosive damage inflicted by concrete over time.

Automotive

While epoxy coatings are limited by their poor UV tolerance, they do provide valuable, durable protection to vehicle parts and underbody components.

Household & Consumer

Numerous products we use daily may have epoxy powder coatings, including large and small appliances, indoor metal furniture and shelving.
