What Is Sandblasting?

Sandblasting is sometimes referred to as abrasive blasting and is a surface finishing technique that leverages on the coarse texture of the abrasive to create clean surfaces for coating. Take sandpaper for instance; it has a rough texture, and when you rub it against an item, the gritty surface eliminates the top layer, giving the item a smooth finish.

For sandblasting, however, an air-compressor is used to spray surfaces with abrasive particles, ridding them of the top layer, resulting in a smooth-looking surface that actually has more surface area for the powder to adhere to.

Why Should You Sandblast Before Powder Coating?

When it comes to powder coating, it is crucial that the item be completely clean as any foreign materials could result in an imperfect finish. This means getting rid of all the dirt, corrosion, oils, damaged plating, paint etc.

This is where sandblasting comes into play. Compared to other cleaning methods, it does a thorough job, removing all foreign materials with ease, resulting in a surface that displays minute peaks and valleys, effectively increasing the surface area, and allowing the powder to have a stronger bond to the surface being coated.

Benefits of Sandblasting

Here are some of the advantages of using sandblasting;

  • Effectiveness - Sandblasting is surprisingly fast and cleans surfaces easily and efficiently.
  • Rust removal - once rust begins to corrode metal, it spreads quickly and may result in permanent damage. Sandblasting removes rust effectively while maintaining the structural integrity of the metal
  • Environmental safety - since sandblasting majorly involves propelling abrasives against surfaces, there are no toxic gases inhaled or produced.
  • Excellent results- sandblasting can be used to clean virtually all surfaces, and the end result is always a perfect finish.
