The Durability of Halar Coating

The Durability of Halar Coating

Many industrial processes require strong, chemically resistant parts that can stand up to a range of temperatures. Halar, a cousin of Teflon (PTFE) is a plastic coating that can fit the bill.

What Is Halar?

Halar, a brand of ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE), is a crystal polymer plastic compound which can be used to add a smooth, even coat to parts to reduce friction and electricity, and provide protection from corrosion and fire.

How Durable Is Halar?  Halar is built to survive.

Temperature. Halar works well and maintains its stiffness in a wide temperature range, between –105F to +300F

Impacts and Stiffness. It holds up to impacts well and it has a superior stiffness rating with a tensile modulus of 1400-2100 MPa.

Fire Resistance. Fire resistant with a limiting oxygen index of 52%, it meets standards for exhaust duct systems among others.

Electrical Resistance.  Halar is a good insulator, has a low dielectric constant, and a low dissipation factor.

Corrosion Resistant. Highly resistant to chemical corrosion, it can easily withstand prolonged contact with both acids and bases in a pH range of 1 to 14.

UV Resistant. Halar is UV-Resistant for both UVA and UVB light, indicating its suitability for outdoor uses.

Ductile and Weldable. It's ductility, even at low temperatures, and its strength mean it performs well in extreme conditions and can be welded using multiple techniques into strong seams and joints that will flatten before they break.

Industrial Uses for Halar

Halar's exceptional durability, smoothness, purity, extreme temperature tolerance, ductility, and resistant qualities make it a go-to coating for countless industrial uses, including:

  • Piping and tubing for duct, fluid, and waste handling
  • Acid production and storage
  • High pressure mining applications
  • Halogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, and related processes
  • Semiconductor manufacture
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Transport vessels for hazardous goods, especially class 8 corrosives
  • Primary and secondary cable jacketing - especially when fire and electrical resistance are important
