Choosing the Right Powder Coating

Choosing the Right Powder Coating

With technological and mechanical advances happening all the time, it can be difficult to keep up. Precision Dip Coating is the resource you need for clear, simple explanations, to make sure you are getting the correct product. Whatever object you need to cover, we have the perfect choice of coating.

What Is a Powder Coating?

Before we begin, here are a few benefits of powder coating:

  • Hard, durable finish (better than most paint coating)
  • Minimal pollution/more environmentally friendly
  • More control over the thickness/evenness of the coat
  • Custom/specialty designs and needs are easily done
  • Significantly faster drying time

There are two main ways of applying powder coating: Fluid Bed and Electrostatic Spray. To learn a few important details to keep in mind before choosing the right method for your needs, keep reading!

Electrostatic Spray or Fluid Bed?

While the Electrostatic Spray is the most common approach, there are unique benefits to both processes. Here are a few of the differences:

Electrostatic Spray

  • Uses a spray gun, with various different nozzles
  • Uses negative, or is some cases positive, electric charge on the powder in order to adhere the powder to the object
  • Can be more difficult if the object has difficult-to-reach-areas
  • Depending on the thickness, may require preheating of the object to get a more smooth coat, however this runs the risk of the powder "running" or dripping
  • Most effective for a coat of less than 300 micrometers

Fluid Bed

  • The "dip" method
  • Involves putting an electrostatic charging medium inside a fairly deep container of powder and dipping the object inside
  • Does not require preheating
  • Better for thicker coating
