Is Plastisol Coating Eco-Friendly?

Mar 12, 2024

As a society, we are constantly making new discoveries about the effects that various materials have on the environment. At Precision Dip Coating, we want our clients to feel empowered to make environmentally-conscious decisions, without feeling overwhelmed by the incredible amount of ever-changing information. Plastisol has become one of the most widely used coatings: if something you own has a soft, durable grip or casing, it is probably a plastisol coating! Here are a few things you might like to know about plastisol.

What Is Plastisol Coating?

Plastisol is a substance that is liquid at room temperature until heated, when it becomes a soft, flexible, rubber-like material. Below are just a few reasons why plastisol is so widely used:

  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Can be used to coat a variety of materials (metals, glass, ceramics, plastics)
  • Chemical resistance
  • No chipping, no tearing
  • Wear resistant
  • Sound-deadening

Not only is it incredibly useful and efficient, there are quite a few ways to apply it! This durable and versatile material definitely seems too good to be true. So what risk factors are there?

Is Plastisol Safe For the Environment

While certainly a material made to be indestructible may have a longer decomposition rate, most environmental issues are primarily due to pollution and emissions caused by the production, use, and application of these substances. Primarily, when looking at eco-friendly materials, we want to find substances with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) rates. In other words, we want a coating that won't release particles into the air, in order to keep the planet, our employees, and our products safe and environmentally friendly. PVC Plastisol is not only non-toxic, but also has 0 VOC, making it one of the most environmentally coating materials.
