Electrostatic spray coating
is one of the most common methods of applying a powder coating. While it is similar to spray-painting in its ease and flexibility of application, its electrostatic nature offers a variety of added benefits.
Electrostatic coatings work using the magic-like power of attraction in electrical charges. Parts to be coated are grounded to release excess electrical charges. The finely ground coating powder receives a negative charge from the spray gun so that each particle of the powder carries the charge. When the coating powder is released by the spray gun, the negatively charged particles are automatically drawn to the grounded metal of the product to be coated. The powder particles attach firmly to the surface and the ground allows the excess electrical charge to dissipate. Coated items are then heated to melt and cure the powder coating, resulting in a very durable, thin, smooth finished surface.
Countless products and parts can enjoy the benefits of electrostatic spray coatings which include:
Versatility
Almost any item that can be grounded and tolerate the heat of curing can successfully be spray coated. Additionally, a wide variety of polymer resins can be used for electrostatic spray coating, including polyester, nylon, epoxy, Halar, polyolefin, polyethylene, and others.
Durability
Because the electrostatic charge is so strong, combined with heat curing, it offers a tremendously durable, long-lasting, highly resistant protective coating.
Attractive & Functional
With such a variety of polymer resins available for spray coating, nearly any appearance and coating benefit can be achieved, including resistance to UV light, corrosion, weather, and other environmental hazards.
Cost Effective
With minimal overspray (the electrostatic charge means most powder attaches to the part being coated and the minimal overspray is easily recovered) and the ability to apply thin, very durable coats, material costs remain comparatively low.
